Another abandoned baby has been rescued.
A premature baby boy was found alive after being left inside a garbage bag behind a New Jersey apartment building, NJ.com reports.
After being found on August 31 by residents of the building, the newborn was rushed to the hospital.
In the following video, the woman who discovered the baby talks about the shocking discovery.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard this story.
A baby boy in China was recently rescued from a sewer pipe after being flushed down the toilet.
A farm dog in Ghana rescued an abandoned baby after protecting the newborn overnight.
And a 23-year-old woman recently abandoned her 3-month-old son Charles outside a Portuguese airport.
“I can see why people must think I am the worst mother in the world,” she said. “I purposefully left my son. I accept that and I’m totally to blame. But I was so depressed, I’m sure I can prove it was post-natal, and we had terrible money problems.”
So why does this happen?
While poverty is often the root cause of abandonment, other factors include many social and cultural factors as well as mental illness.
Another common reason for abandoning a newborn – also referred to as ‘baby dumping’ – is teenage pregnancies. Abandonment can be an alternative to abortion.
Preventative measures include education, family planning, postpartum services and support for motherhood.
What are your thoughts on the issue? How can we prevent another abandoned baby?
