A Canadian man is sharing his tragic and heartbreaking story.
Dylan Benson of Victoria, B.C. is speaking out about his wife, Robyn Benson. On Saturday (February 8), the 32-year-old woman was on life support, gave birth to their son Iver, and died the following day.
In late December, at five months pregnant, Robyn complained of a headache just before collapsing from a brain hemorrhage. While unresponsive, she was rushed to the hospital and pronounced brain-dead the following day. She has been on life support until baby Iver could be delivered.
On Saturday night, doctors performed a caesarean section on Robyn, and then on Sunday, she was taken off life support and died.
Dylan held back tears as he described what it was like to hold their son Iver for the first time.
“It was incredible,” the proud father told Parentdish. “He is really small and tiny and just really cute. You know he is obviously very fragile because he is so small. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.”
“It’s overwhelming for sure,” he told Global News. “I mean the last couple of days have been positive, as far as anybody who gets to have their first child, everything that comes with that, but also a deep, deep sadness.”
“It was just a very, very, it was very difficult to let go [of Robyn], but she did the best that she could and then we had to say goodbye,” he continued. “I was very proud that my son will get to know that his mother was so strong.”
The new dad says it’s “going to be bumpy like it would be for anybody who’s going home with a new baby. But I’m just going to give it my all and do the best that I can for him.”
“I think she would be very proud with him, he’s an amazing little man,” he said of his wife. “There was never any doubt in my mind this is what she would have wanted. And seeing him now, there’s no question.”
Baby Iver – who was born 12 weeks early – will spend the next 8 to 12 weeks in the NICU unit at the hospital.
The grieving husband waited until Monday to announce his son’s arrival – and his wife’s passing – via Facebook. The high school sweethearts were wed last July, after dating for 16 years. Read his heartbreaking message below:
“Dear friends and family,
It is with a heavy heart but also with extreme proudness that I am posting this update…
On Saturday evening, my beautiful and amazing son, Iver Cohen Benson, was born. Iver is healthy and is the cutest and most precious person I have ever met. As to be expected, it will still be a bumpy ride for he and I as he continues to grow under the care of the wonderful staff at the hospital.
On Sunday, we had to unfortunately say goodbye to the strongest and most wonderful woman I have ever met. I miss Robyn more than words can explain. I could not be more impressed with her strength, and I am so lucky to have known her. She will live on forever within Iver, and in my heart.
Thank you to each and every one of you for your love, your kind words, and your support during this incredibly difficult time.”
As of Wednesday, an online campaign to raise money for baby Iver has generated more than $185,000 in donations from people all over the world.
