Top 5 Mom Comments After MTV VMAs

If you watched the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards held in New York City on Sunday, August 25, perhaps the ‘mom comments’ (insert Marge Simpson voice) were on overdrive in your house.

Where are Hannah Montana’s pants? What is twerking? Spit out your gum Harry Stiles!

These, and a plethora of other mom comments, were flying out of my mouth.

Before you start calling me old, I’m only 38 and have been witness to years of Madonna‘s shenanigans, the ridiculous nip-slip/wardrobe malfunction between Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, and the Sinead O’Connor’s pope incident to name a few. None of these public displays of attention got me too upset.

But holy moly, I was in mom-mode last night! Check out my top 5 mom comments after the 2013 MTV VMAs last night:

1. What happened to Hannah Montana?

Sure, she’s 20-years-old now and wants to break away from the Hannah Montana role and image. But what on earth was Miley Cyrus thinking last night? I wasn’t so fussed about her red carpet look, with the silly/spikey ponytails and the bedazzled midriff ensemble.

And I’m really trying to get over the fact that she is, in fact, singing about snorting cocaine in her latest hit single.

But, to me, her raunchy onstage performance of We Can’t Stop and her duet of Blurred Lines with Robin Thicke looked one step away from a full-fledge porn career. My best mom advice to Miley? Yes, sex sells in your industry, but your personal integrity is priceless. Stop the public displays of twerking and fake orgasms, and save that for the bedroom like the rest of us!

2. Robin Thicke should be ashamed of himself.

As a 36-year-old married man, and father of a preschooler, Robin Thicke should be ashamed of his performance with Miley last night. While I love the song Blurred Lines, and think he’s an insanely talented musician, Robin sold out and brought a 20-year-old troubled youngster down with him.

Not cool at all, Robin.

3. Miley’s parents should be ashamed of themselves.

One would think that Miley broke her parents’ achy break hearts last night. But nope. After Miley’s provocative onstage performance, her mother Tish Cyrus gave her famous daughter a standing ovation! Not only that, she retweeted the following message to her 300k+ Twitter fans:

“Obsessed with @MileyCyrus’s performance at the VMA’s. It was like a karaoke party at the Playboy mansion. In the 90’s. In platform sneakers.”

And proud papa Billy Ray Cyrus also took to Twitter after their daughter’s performance: “Thanking God for so many blessings tonight. Continue to pray for world peace. More love …less hate,” he tweeted.

While I agree with the “less hate” part, I’d also like to see “more pants” and “less public gyrating in S&M-esque lingerie” as part of the Cyrus family mantra.

4. Will Smith & Jada Pinkett Smith are doing something right.

Although Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith receive plenty of online criticism for their parenting choices — from non-traditional quotes, to being driven by fame, to hair and fashion choices  — it seems they’re doing something right.

During Miley’s questionable performance, the Smith family were caught by an audience cam giving quite the priceless reaction.

While Miley was twerking away, Will and his teen kids cringed, confirming just how jaw-dropping the performance really was.

5. Taylor Swift is a woman now.

And in other news, was it just me, or did Taylor Swift enter womanhood last night?

The 22 hitmaker looked simply stunning in a plunging Herve Leger by Max Azria gown, completing her retro look with finger curls and a signature sassy red lip.

Sure, she was caught telling her ex-boyfriend Harry Stiles to “Shut the f*ck up” alongside her BFF Selena Gomez. Still, she seemed so elegant and grown up at last night’s awards show.

Bottom Line: Like it or not, Miley is a role model for young girls. I strongly suggest that she reconsiders her recent career moves.
