Are you looking for a job that you can do from the comfort of your own home?
Let’s face it, once the babies arrive it can be nearly impossible to return to the grind of the workforce. That said, many of us would love to work from home, but don’t know where to start.
Mothers have historically been one of the most highly educated and under-utilized job candidate pools, with millions of women leaving the workforce because they are unable to find professional career options that offer flexible work arrangements.
FlexJobs has noticed this growing trend and created the perfect campaign to empower mothers to explore their career options.
In celebration of Mother’s Day, FlexJobs is kicking off “100 Days of Jobs for Moms,” a free campaign to help mothers at all stages of their careers find jobs that are more family-friendly. For 100 days, FlexJobs will provide dedicated job search articles, expert tips, and industry insight on its blog for mothers looking to re-enter the workforce, as well as mothers currently in the workforce but wanting or needing more work flexibility.
Sara Sutton Fell, CEO of FlexJobs, sat down with HerScoop and talked about this exciting new campaign for moms everywhere.
HerScoop: Tell us all about the 100 Days of Jobs for Moms initiative. What is the goal of this campaign? How can we get involved?
SSF: “The goal of 100 Days of Jobs for Moms is to inspire and empower mothers to explore their career options, ramp up their job search, and find flexible employment. We are so excited to run this campaign because we know that there are so many fantastic flexible job options out there, and they can make a huge impact on the lives of moms everywhere. But we knew just talking about the variety of flexible jobs available wasn’t enough. We wanted to take a step further and truly guide moms through the job search process, from career exploration and development all the way through salary negotiation, and everything in between.
There are a number of ways to get involved. First, know that the campaign is completely free! Here are some tips for participating:

HerScoop: Tell us about FlexJobs. What kinds of jobs are available? How often is the site updated? Are the jobs open to U.S. residents only?
SSF: “FlexJobs is a job search service that helps connect job seekers with companies offering flexible job listings. Every job on our site is pre-screened to weed out scams, professional-level, and offers flexibility like working from home, part-time schedules, flexible schedules, and freelance contract work. We’re the leader in our field and have been featured by Good Morning America, CNN, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Woman’s Day, and many other outlets. We’re also the Official Job Board for Working Mother magazine.
The jobs listed on FlexJobs are available in over 50 career categories and range from entry-level to executive. They all have some element of flexibility, and many offer a combination of flexible work options. We have a team of job researchers who update the site every day with hundreds of new job postings, and we clean out our listings every week so our members won’t find expired posts–only available, legitimate flexible jobs.
While the majority of our listings are for U.S. residents only, we also see jobs for other countries like Australia, Canada, the UK, and “Anywhere” jobs which have no location requirement.”
HerScoop: Tell us some success stories from FlexJobs. And tell us why it’s the perfect job search site for busy moms.
SSF: “We hear from successful job seekers every week and we’re always thrilled to share their stories.
- Recently, we heard from a mom who found a telecommuting job as an RN Behavioral Health Case Manager, and how flexibility helps her care for her two disabled children.
- A job seeker who had been laid off and who lives in a rural community used FlexJobs to find a work-from-home job as CEO.
- And a mom of three young children found a part-time freelance job as an Editor, which helps her contribute to the family budget while staying home to care for the kids.
FlexJobs really is the perfect site to help busy moms find a job. Flexible jobs are a great fit for moms because they really fit your life. Whether you want to work from home so you don’t have to commute, or work part-time in your career field, or have a flexible schedule to fit in doctor’s appointments and school events (or any combination of those!), FlexJobs can help you find the right job for your needs.
We make the search for flexible employment faster, easier, and safer because our team of job researchers does all the searching and vetting for you. As a member of FlexJobs, you’ll find only pre-screened, legitimate, professional-level opportunities. You’ll spend a lot less time searching for jobs, and a lot more time applying to the great jobs you find on the site. Our job seekers are able to craft exceptional cover letters and resumes with that extra time, and they don’t have to worry about running into scam job listings, ads, or other too-good-to-be-true opportunities.”
HerScoop: What is your best advice for moms looking to work from home? Where to start? What to do?
SSF: “The first thing to do if you want to work from home is to decide what type of work you’d like to do. There’s a huge variety of work-from-home jobs available, so it’s important to know what you’re looking for so you can focus your efforts. The career areas with the most listings include medical/health, customer service, administrative, education, writing/editing, sales, nonprofit/philanthropy, and accounting/finance, but there are opportunities in many other fields as well.
Next, take some time to update (or completely overhaul) your resume and your LinkedIn profile. As you’re applying to jobs, having these updated will help you apply faster. Also, be sure to customize your resumes and cover letters for each job you apply to.
And finally, take some time to learn what it’s like to work from home. Make sure you have a good space to work, can eliminate distractions, and have childcare options in place. Ask your friends who work from home for their tips, or read the FlexJobs blog for fantastic advice.”
