Jim Carrey: “I Learned Many Great Lessons From My Father”

'Horton Hears a Who!' world premiere at Mann Village Theatre in Westwood, California

Keeping up with our Father’s Day celebrations, let’s hear from fummyman Jim Carrey.

In a moving commencement address to Maharishi University of Management’s class of 2014, the Dumb and Dumber star, 52, revealed how his late father inspired him to follow his dreams.

“I learned many great lessons from my father,” the father of 27-year-old daughter Jane, and grandfather of 4-year-old grandson Jackson says in the heartfelt speech.

Encouraging the grads to follow their bliss, Carrey shares his thoughts on decision making and how it affects our lives.

“You can spend your whole life worrying about the pathway to the future, but all that will ever be is what’s happening here.”

He goes on to talk about making “safe” versus heartfelt decisions.

“So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality. What we really want seems out of reach and impossible.”

The funnyman goes on to say that he’s “proof” that the universe will provide if we just ask.

“My father could’ve been a great comedian but he didn’t believe that that was possible for him, so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and when I was 12-years-old, he was let go from that safe job and our family had to do whatever we could to survive.”
